ERG Newsletter

Below is a sample newsletter I drafted for a women's employee resource group at a large apparel company. The content was modified to remove sensitive information.

Happy Holidays –

The sun is setting on our first full year as a family, and we’re so appreciative of the hard work our members have put in to bring women’s rights to the center of our culture. In 2019, we:

  • Sparked thought-provoking dialogue on the female experience at the 2nd Annual Viola Conference and the Brown Bag Lunch with Ruth DeGolia of Mercado Global

  • Advocated for Women’s Health Access by participating in Women’s Wellness Week and planning an intimate educational session with Planned Parenthood reps

  • Promoted member career growth with the AAUW Negotiation Skills Workshop and assisted new women in the workforce through our partnership with Dress for Success

  • Recognized everyday female heroes through the Allies & Advocacy Awards and our Words of Women Book Club

In 2020, we will focus on four quarterly themes:

  • Q1: SELF (believe in your elf)

    • Themes: self-defense, self-care, self-love

    • Potential events: meditation, yoga, self-defense class

  • Q2: HER (all the Jingle Ladies)

    • Themes: strong women, story, history, inspiration

    • Potential events: Women's Day & Mother's Day, collaboration with Project Onyx on a panel/speaker for Black Women in Leadership

  • Q3: VOTE (you snow the drill)

    • Themes: 100th anniversary of women's suffrage

    • Potential events: register to vote, 100th anniversary of women's suffrage

  • Q4: GIVE (your presents is requested)

    • Themes: giving back at the holidays, volunteer

    • Potential events: holiday give-back events

We'll bring more collaborative speakers series to the plaza; cultivate a career development pipeline for members; and launch a first-of-its kind mentorship program. We’re excited for what’s to come, and we hope you’ll continue to believe in and support the work we're doing for women & allies.

Cheers,

Leadership Team

TOOLS & TIPS

NEGOTIATION SKILLS WORKSHOP WITH AAUW

The American Association of University Women (AAUW) taught us how to negotiate a raise, promotion and starting salary, and we’re here to share the wealth (get it?).

  • Did you know? Because 401k contributions and bonus structures are based on salary, women lose more per year than just the difference in salary from male counterparts.

  • Research the job market + determine target salary: Head to Salary.com and determine your target salary, target salary range, and your “walk-away” number (or the lowest salary/benefit value you’re willing to accept)

  • Get your offer in writing before negotiating – then, drive the negotiation by touting your unique and valuable skillset and explaining how your target salary range matches your value (and market standards).

MINDA HEARTS EVENT

We hosted Minda Harts, founder, speaker, podcaster, author, and seat creator, and author of The Memo: What Women of Color Need to Know to Secure a Seat at the Table. Minda read from her book and answered questions about how to promote workplace equity.

If you missed it, watch the event replay.
